The journey from Egypt to Canaan was only a eleven-day journey but the people of Israel took forty years for that (see Deut 1:2). It was the Lord Who guided them and not man. Why then did God take them around for forty years? God guides us according to the state of our heart.
God had not wanted to take them through the wilderness but because of the state of their heart He had to do it. For some of us it is the desert journey all the time. The desert is a place where there is no flowers, no grass, no leaves, no shade, no fruits; it is a dry and desolate place. If God is to give us guidance, if He is to lead us in the way He wants to, our heart should be right with God. If our heart is stubborn and hard, the paths of God leads us in will be hard.
“Such as turn aside into their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity” (Psa 125:5). If we hold on to our crooked ways, the Lord will not show us His perfect ways. So let us fear the Lord and depart from every appearance of evil. “What man is he that feareth the Lord? Him shall He teach in the way that He shall choose” (Psa 25:12).
