May 23 - EFFECTS OF BEING HURT

We are living in an age in which people often get hurt, offended or wounded, and that, very easily. One saint rightly said, “If we are hurt, it is indeed our pride which is hurt.” Haman was in a high position in Persia; but look at how much his pride was hurt when just one person did not bow before him – see Esther 5:11-13.

I Kings Ch.22 and II Chronicles Ch.18 relate the story of a defeated king who pleaded, “Carry me out of the host; for I am wounded.” Yes, a wounded man can no longer fight the battles of the Lord. He has to be taken off the battlefield in disgrace.

Jesus disclosed the truth that those who get offended lack spiritual depth (Mk 4:5, 6, 17). Does that speak to us? Do we have spiritual depth or do we harbour hurt feelings, and find fault with those who appear to be wounding, hurting or offending us? We are called to be good soldiers of Christ (II Tim 2:3). We have a ‘good fight’ to fight – against sin, against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places – in order to lay hold on eternal life. So let us be careful not to get ‘hurt’ in the battlefield.
